Portsmouth v Manchester United and the Dubious Penalty

Not that it mattered much in the end, but Saturday in the Premier League saw Mike Dean (with the help of his linesman Richard West on one instance) award three penalties, one of which must have been one of, if not the most dubious penalty this season in the Premier League.

Manchester United looked a bit sluggish in the first 15-20 minutes and weathered an early storm of Pompey attack. Sir Alex Ferguson was perched high above the pitch in the director’s box and seemed to show Source: EPL Talk RSS Feed

‘Sheed – Enough WIth The Flopping

(cake pic taken from—where else?===Need For ‘Sheed)

Not only did I miss the D-League’s Austin Toros winning their season opener last night while watching Rayon Beach make their Trailer Space debut, but I also didn’t catch Rasheed Wallace scoring 15 points off the bench in Boston’s defeat of Toronto.  Never one to mince words, ‘Sheed took issue with a 2nd quarter foul drawn by the floptastic Hedo Turkoglu, with the following post-game protest occurring hours after WallaceSource: Can't Stop the Bleeding RSS Feed

Aroldis Chapman Fires Little Known Agent

Aroldis Chapman, the Cuban defector who will be one of the most sought after free agents this offseason, has decided to fire his little known agent. Edwin Mejia, who even hardcore baseball insiders had never heard of until he became Chapman’s agent, was given the heave-ho.

Randy and Alan Hendricks are Chapman’s agents. The Hendricks brothers are known for representing a number of players including Andy Pettitte of the New York Yankees.

Fox Soccer Channel Misses Live Coverage Of EPL Goal Fests

While playing with my kids on Sunday morning, I checked Twitter for a minute and was astonished to see that Jermain Defoe had just scored a hat trick for Tottenham Hotspur. My first impulse was to grab the remote and to switch on Fox Soccer Channel, but I was greeted with the live match between Stoke City and Portsmouth. Then, for a second, I thought that the match from White Hart Lane was on Setanta Sports. Wrong again. I quickly realized that the match of the season was being shown by FoxSource: EPL Talk RSS Feed

Obvious Handball By Henry Dooms Ireland (Video)

Thierry Henry is one of this generation’s legends of European soccer. The 32-year-old striker has been a member of the French national team since 1997 and has scored over 50 goals for Les Bleux - to say nothing of his nearly 230 goals in club play. He was one of the faces of Gillette shaving products stateside and has also been featured in innumerable soccer advertisements here and overseas. He’s also, as FOX SPORTS notes, guilty of one of the most flagrant uncalled handballs in theSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

What Went Right: The Midseason Pickups

Over the next week or so, we’ll again break down what went wrong and what went right for the 2009 Yankees. The series this year will be much more enjoyable than the last.

While the big offseason additions received the majority of the media and fan attention during the season (rightfully so), the little moves the team made to tweak the roster midseason also played a key role in bringing them to the promised land.

For most of the first half, the best bat the Yankees had on theSource: River Avenue Blues RSS Feed

What Went Right: Injury Bouncebacks

Over the next week or so, we’ll again break down what went wrong and what went right for the 2009 Yankees. The series this year will be much more enjoyable than the last.

At this time last year, the Yankees roster was anything but set. They had a huge offer out to CC Sabathia, and planned to pursue at least one other starting pitcher. That would help shore up the rotation, but clearly there were no guarantees. On top of that, the Yankees powerhouse offense went out with a whimper in Source: River Avenue Blues RSS Feed

Boston Coll’s “Beanpot Trot” Like A Musical Fart

With so many sports going on during this season, we often forget to pay any attention to college hockey. And if more videos like this surface, college hockey is going to wish we wouldn’t.

Before the 1986 Beanpot tournament, some Boston College players got together for a little rap session - and came out with a musical tribute to their own on-ice prowess called the “Beanpot Trot”.

So, how did this Super Bowl Shuffle for skaters turn out? See & hear for yourself after theSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

Economy Might Ruin LeBron, Wade and Bosh’s Sleepover

A source for the Miami Heat told Chud Ford this past week they were working on a way to take over the world by getting LeBron James and Chris Bosh to play with the fashionably electric Dwyane Wade next season.

One league source told me that LeBron, Wade and Bosh have all talked about playing together. Now, given the economy, the reality has changed. In the summer of 2008 we were projecting a $64 million cap for the summer of 2010. Now the league has warned teams that the cap may fall Source: The Big Lead RSS Feed

Book It, Done: Shaunie Kicks Shaq To The Curb

All across America gigantic underpants are flying at half-staff today as it is learned that Shaunie O’Neal has filed for separation from her large, Cleveland Cavaliers-playing husband. This just a day after it was alleged by one web site that Shaq was canoodling with Gilbert Arenas‘ fiance, Laura Govan.

The site YOUNG, BLACK AND FABULOUS, which needless to say I have bookmarked, has some quite graphic emails purportedly sent back and forth between Shaq and Govan. And the papersSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

CNN: Your Lousy Golf Game Is Killing The Planet

What’s the most insidious pollution wracking Mother Earth these days? If you guessed fossil fuel exhaust, nuclear waste, or nasty cow farts, no, no, and maybe yes but probably no. The real answer? That drive you hooked into the next zip code on 14 last Sunday.

(And they’re killing the whales.)

Yes, if what CNN is saying is true, America’s golf habit is becoming increasingly toxic to the planet; in our country alone, we lose over 300 million golf balls a year. ThatSource: SPORTSbyBROOKS RSS Feed

How Did You Find Who You Support? & The Search For Credibility

Following up from an earlier article I’d like to pose a question to all the non ex-pat North American readers of EPL Talk: How Did You Find Who You Support?

It’s ultimately a broad question that has more potential answers to it than current injury concerns at Liverpool. But I believe the question sparks an interesting debate as Americans are still searching for their place in world football. When I first got this idea (by divine intervention), I realized it may only apply to a verySource: EPL Talk RSS Feed

What happens when you’re an attractive Danish woman who reaches the U.S. Open as a relative unknown?

If you’re Caroline Wozniacki, you suddenly have paparazzi staking you out in far-flung locations like the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.

The occasion was a girls-only holiday with her teenage friend Angelique Keber and sisters Urszula and Agnieszka, reported by Copenhagen’s EKSTRA BLADET as her first vacation taken without parental supervision. (more…)

J.B. Gerald Wanted $500,000 In UNM Hush Money?

Martin Salazar of the ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL has an update on the increasingly outrageous details of the Mike Locksley assault aftermath at the University of New Mexico:

University of New Mexico officials alleged Wednesday that assistant coach J.B. Gerald demanded $500,000 from the university in exchange for remaining silent about the Mike Locksley altercation. Evidence in the case was destroyed, UNM officials told the Journal.

Score One For The Swoosh: Marcus Jordan In Nike

A couple weeks ago, we brought you news that Marcus Jordan, son of Michael Jordan, was refusing to comply with the school’s adidas shoe deal, insisting instead on wearing Nike on account of his father’s inextricable history with the brand. The story was that UCF had granted him permission to wear Nikes in exchange for signing with the school, up until some executives at adidas balked at the deal afterward.

(Will Marcus be stepping out in his Air Jordan exclusives?)
